The highest ranking honor of the Italian Republic, the Order of Merit is awarded for "merit acquired by the nation" in the fields of literature, the arts, economy, public service, and social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities.
The Order of Merit with decoration of “Cavaliere” (OMRI) has been bestowed on Mr. Mirabelli by decree of Giorgio Napolitano, the President of the Italian Republic, as head of the orders of knighthood; it is traditionally awarded on June 2, the anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Italy.
“To receive this great honor from the country of my ancestors is truly humbling” - said Mr. Mirabelli - “Like many Italian Americans, I have reaped the rewards of previous generations who came to this country, worked hard and made great sacrifices to improve their own lives and those of their children. It is my privilege to give back to the country from whence my forefathers, and those of many of my friends and colleagues originally came”.
Mr. Mirabelli was presented this honor by the Italian Ambassador to the United States , Claudio Bisogniero, at the Italian Embassy in the District of Columbia.
Since 2002, Mr. Mirabelli has been the President of The John R. Mott Scholarship Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to awarding scholarships for higher education to students who are natives of Calabria, Italy. To date, over 1300 scholarships have been given to Calabrian students by this Foundation. Mr. Mirabelli is also a former Treasurer and Board member of The National Italian American Foundation, Inc., NIAF.
Based in Genova Burns Giantomasi Webster’s Washington, D.C. office, Mr. Mirabelli is a member of the Business Law & Commercial Transactions and Complex Commercial Litigation Practice Groups. He has advised clients on transactional, administrative, litigation and enforcement matters before the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as well as public and private corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, trade regulation and banking matters.
Mr. Mirabelli played a major role in having Federal legislation passed in 2008 which assisted him in obtaining a 172 million dollar settlement from the Government of Libya on behalf of 56 US servicemen who were the victims of a Libyan Government terrorist bombing at the LaBelle Discotheque in Berlin, Germany in 1986.
Mr. Mirabelli’s government experience involved work as a trial attorney at the SEC in the Office of Administrative Proceedings and Investigations. At the SEC, he was responsible for the conduct of complex investigations with respect to matters involving possible civil or criminal violations of the Securities Exchange Act of 1933, and for the conduct of injunctive proceedings relating to the registration and reporting requirements of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Mr. Mirabelli was also chief hearing counsel of the SEC’s public investigation into the “Propriety of Estimates, Forecasts and Projections of Economic Performance” and the chief trial counsel of the commission’s public investigation of the “Hot Issues Securities Markets.”
He holds a J.D from American University Washington College of Law, and a B.A. from Georgetown University.
