Now celebrating its 15th year of exhibiting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to present the 4th year of a collaborative exhibition by a group of 25 South Florida High School students selected through an open call. This year marks the largest LAB group to date. Under the direction of practicing contemporary visual artists Monica Lopez de Victoria of the TM Sisters and Loriel Beltran, students are given the opportunity to create a collaborative exhibition in a public venue and manage all aspects of its production in a three week summer intensive. Students also visit art institutions on guided field trips and have question and answer periods with top art professionals from the community.
The students, currently attending American Sr. High, Miami Beach Sr. High, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, Design and Architecture Sr. High, Dr. Michael Krop High, Hialeagh Sr. High, Hialeah-Miami Lakes High, New World School of the Arts High, and TERRA Environmental Research Insitute were selected from an open call by a committee of local art professionals.
As a hallmark that makes Locust Projects stand out from other art venues, the organization embraces cutting-edge exhibitions and innovation in art. In furtherance of the not-for-profit’s 15 year commitment to providing an approachable arts venue for the South Florida community, LAB, developed in Locust Projects’ 5,000 square foot space in Miami’s Design District, culminates with an opening reception where students’ parents, teachers, and friends are invited to celebrate with Miami’s art community on Second Saturday Art Walk in July.
The goal of LAB is to promote contemporary art and project-based learning as a means to encourage creativity, critical analysis, and problem solving, while building communication skills. This unique initiative allows young artists to learn the practical and exciting aspects of creating a public exhibition in collaboration with their peers.
