MAY 2013 - Enhancing Knowledge Regarding European Children's Use, Risk and Safety Online

Alice Willi By Alice Willi | May 23, 2013 | United States

New! European evidence base – now doubled in size

  • Our open-access, searchable database now contains information about 1200 recently conducted studies in Europe on children’s use of internet and mobile technologies. What’s more, we have summarised the findings of the most recent 500 studies and included those in the database. Try it out!
  • To explain what’s in the database, and to identify key research trends and pressing research gaps in the European evidence base, read our new report, Children’s use of online technologies in Europe.
  • Wondering how to research children and online technologies? Our just published Frequently Asked Questions shares best practice about research design, sampling and recruitment, methods of data collection, approaches to data analysis and reporting the findings.

Identifying, coding, summarising and reviewing the European evidence database has involved the efforts of all 33 countries in the EU Kids Online network: we thank them all here.

New! Brazilian report just published

  • New Brazilian findings, based on the EU Kids Online survey, show that children’s internet access is far more unequal in Brazil than in Europe, with few children online among the poorest households.
  • Once online, Brazilian children express more concern about conduct risks (e.g. sexting and cyberbullying) - 30% vs. 20% in Europe. All the findings are published by TIC Kids Online Brazil in Portuguese and English.
  • 130 stakeholders representing government, NGOs, educational institutions and the media attended the launch in São Paulo (May 2013) at which Ellen Helsper (LSE) and Cristina Ponte (EU Kids Portugal) were panelists. CETIC.br will conduct the survey again next year.

Recently announced

  • In their own words: what bothers children online? Sonia Livingstone, Lucyna Kirwil, Cristina Ponte and Elisabeth Staksrud (February 2013). In their own words reports the views of nearly 10,000 children who told us about what upsets them and their friends online. Pornography and violent content (named by 22% and 18% of children who told us of risks) top children’s concerns. Many children are upset by violent, aggressive or gory online content on video-sharing sites. They reveal shock and disgust on seeing cruelty, killings, abuse of animals and even the news – often real rather than fictional violence adds to the depth of children’s reactions.
  • Swiss survey report published
  • Net Children Go Mobile – new project underway
  • Articles published on cyberbullying, mobile risks and asking children about risk online (all open access)

Coming soon

  • Short report on the internet uses of very young children
  • Short report on risks associated with mobile and smart phones
  • Russian survey report
