Verona - April 2014. The Vinitaly International Award 2014 gone to Tenuta Greppo of the Biondi Santi family renowned for its Montalcino and French Chateau d'Yquem, producer of the wine of the same name - and one of the most famous in the world.

The choice this year rewarded two wine cellars acknowledged all over the world as examples to be followed in terms of upholding values over time through the search for production excellence.

The Vinitaly International Award - as the motivations explained - "is assigned to Tenuta Greppo, associated with the figure of Franco Biondi Santi, the 'custodian' of Brunello di Montalcino and 'gentleman' of Italian wine who sadly died during Vinitaly 2013. The company is now guided by his son, Jacopo Biondi Santi, who has taken up from his father the legacy of a centuries-old tradition, as a 'guardian' of cultural and quality heritage of this great Tuscan red wine and as a guide for the historic estate and one of the most important Italian wine families which invented, through innovation in the nineteenth century, one of today's most famous and celebrated Italian wines in the world".

The award was made to Chateau d'Yquem since "from the 16th century to date, every bottle of Chateau d'Yquem has embodied the exceptional uniqueness of a terroir and the skill of the men and women who work there. Possibly the most famous wine in the world, and certainly the most famous sweet wine, Chateau d'Yquem is the archetype of wine of immense quality. Even today, thanks to the entire team guided by Pierre Lurton, Chateau d'Yquem is an assurance of style, elegance and quality for the whole wine-growing and oenology world".

The awards were been presented during the Gala Evening on Saturday 5 April in the Gran Guardia, Verona's historic Palace opposite the Arena and equally the prestigious location for OperaWine and Vinitaly and the City. The dinner was been accompanied by the "Excellence of 20th International Wine Competition".

The evening was also seen the announcement of winners of the Communicator of the Year Award, set up in collaboration with the IWSC and which will be presented in London next Autumn. There was an all-female line-up this year: Fiona Beckett, Helen McGinn, Victoria Moore and Jane Parkinson, for their contributions to knowledge of wine world-wide.
