The "awards" were given to individuals or organizations with wide geographical coverage in South Florida and with different forms of art ranging from movies to dance, from theater to music or the narrative.
As explained enthusiastically Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation's vice president for arts: “One of the most exciting things this year is that the ideas are coming from a wider distribution of neighborhoods: You have winners from Opa-locka, you have winners from Hialeah, you have winners from deep South Dade at the new cultural center, you have Indian dance in Broward County. I think it just took us awhile for people to understand that we were serious about wanting the best idea and we didn’t care where it came from.”
"Miami continues to develop their own cultural identity, and almost everything comes from organizations that are in the midst of the people, the community continues to gain a sense of self through culture and we want to support the vitality. " said Mr Scholl who then added that the greatest gifts are for the institutions. "Our major institutions not have large donations," said Mr. Scholl. "But the institutions have provided artistic excellence and have made special efforts to involve the public."
The challenge started around 2008, it was initially funded for five years but the foundation announced, on Monday, that there will be more than $ 9 million to continue the Knight Arts challenge for another three years.
Knight also announced 14 million dollars in grants to seven other institutions.
With this new addition of $ 23 million, the total gift of the Foundation for the arts in South Florida reached $ 86 million.
Mr. Alberto Ibargüen, President and CEO of the Foundation said: " We want to support art institutions that offer opportunities for everyday people to Miami to see, feel, participate and engage with art ....."
Among the large bags that were announced there is $ 5 million for the Miami City Ballet, to increase the spread and add new works, including commissions, $ 5 million dollars Wolfsonian-FIU to develop programs of community involvement and collection more accessible on the Internet, $ 2 million to the Cleveland Orchestra, in part to expand awareness education programs, $ 1 million shares for the Design and Architecture High School y New World School of the Arts, to send students cultural trips to New York and Europe, $ 500,000 to expand the Borscht Film Festival and $ 500,000 for the Miami International Film Festival, to increase the prize money and attract the participation of directors.
A full list of winners is online on .KnightArts.org.
The Vice President Mr. Scholl said the foundation has received many questions about future plans for the challenge. "Frankly, this great enthusiasm that we find in people had a lot to do with us in the decision to extend the challenge, in fact we are beginning to have more than 1200 inquiries per year, and we believe that the quality of inquiries was high" he said.
A key requirement for the challenge is to be able to develop the skills to raise funds which you will have need to replace the subsidy when his term ends.
So all those who wants to participate in this great opportunity are advised....
