A 14 year old boy has died in Japan due to serious injuries when a powerful tornado struck the city of Tsukuba, about 60 kilometers from Tokyo,  the local hospital said. Another 30 people were injured, some of them hospitalized, as reported  the fire department and health authorities.

The city of northeastern Japan is a science center, with dozens of research institutes and academics, but the tornado has hit the residential areas. About 200 buildings were damaged. Tokyo Electric Power Co., energy company that supplies electricity to the area, said that 24 thousand homes were without power.

The Fukushima nuclear power plant was not affected by the storm, operator Tepco said.  Tornadoes are relatively rare in the Tokyo area.
