MATCHES OF THE DAY

Venus Williams vs. Sloane Stephens; CoCo Vandeweghe vs. Madison Keys

The Stars and Stripes will fly on women’s semifinal day at the 2017 US Open, with all four members of the penultimate round hailing from the U.S.

First-time US Open semifinalist Sloane Stephens faces nine-time Open semifinalist Venus Williams to lead off the evening, a matchup of two players who have overcome a lot – foot surgery and an 11-month layoff for Stephens; Sjogren’s Syndrome for Venus – to advance to the semifinal round. Stephens, whose only other major semifinal came at the 2013 Australian Open, is in search of her first-ever Grand Slam final, while Venus is vying for her third Slam final of the year and her first major singles crown since Wimbledon 2008.

Good friends Madison Keys and CoCo Vandeweghe will close the evening, playing for the third time this summer. Keys won both earlier contests – in two tight sets in the Stanford final and in three sets in the first round in Cincinnati – and has the advantage of having played during the night sessions for each of her last three matches. But Vandeweghe is coming off one of the best wins of her career, over No. 1 Karolina Pliskova.

SPECIAL ATTRACTION

South Plaza: The South Plaza was redesigned as a vibrant meeting place for the 2005 US Open and was designed again for the 2016 US Open. At the heart of the plaza is a fountain designed by WET Enterprises, the internationally recognized designers of the groundbreaking water feature at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Architecturally, the two pools of the fountain reinforce the axis between the Unisphere and Arthur Ashe Stadium. The underground vault housing the pumps could hold more than one million tennis balls, and the entire fountain contains more than half a mile of piping.

Wilson: Stop by the Wilson flagship store located near the entrance to Arthur Ashe Stadium to check out the latest Wilson tennis products and apparel. The Wilson store near Court 14 is an easy way to find the ever-popular Wilson Jumbo Ball.
